Mile Markers For Running And Walking Events

Iker Soler

If you're organizing a charity walking or running event you have a lot to think about. From advertising to planning the route to recruiting corporate sponsor, a successful road running or walking event comes down to making sure that all of your details create fun and festive atmosphere.

One important detail you should pay close attention to are the mile markers you use during your event.

Create a Celebration

Every step you take in a running or walking event brings you one step closer to the finish. This sense of progress is important and should be celebrated. Here are a few ways to ensure that your mile markers celebrate every step your participants take:

  • Go Big: your mile markers should be noticeable. Making each mile marker ostentatiously large and festive will help them standout. Creating tunnels of balloons or using inflatable structures that require participants to run underneath will help every feel like they're crossing a new threshold every time they reach a mile marker.
  • Bells and Whistles: Aside from being aesthetically bold, your mile markers should be interactive. Placing a band or deejay at each mile marker will pump up your participants and give them a bit of affirmation every mile marker they pass.

Marker Partners

Corporate partners love to sponsor walking and running events. They allow for mass marketing, philanthropic donations, and community partnerships.

  • Sell Each Mile: branding each mile of your event with a corporate sponsors logo and/or products can be an easy way to increase corporate donations. Additionally, if your running or walking event includes a novel geographic feature (steep hill, stunning river vista, etc.) you can "brand" that feature of your course.

More Miles

When thinking about mile markers, you should remember that there are other milestones to celebrate. Consider using the strategies described above for other distances in your event.

  • Quarters or Thirds: denoting every quarter of third of your event can help improve the enthusiasm of your participants and help them track their progress. Placing water tables or aid stations at these points can also help you strategize how you want to provide assistance to your participants as they walk or run.
  • Halfway: the halfway mark has an obvious allure, making this threshold particularly visible is a no-brainer.
  • 400, 200, and 100 to Go: bringing your participants home down the finishing sprint is also an easy way to make your event end with a flourish.
