Simple Maintenance Strategies Let You Be Diligent About Digital Sign Maintenance

Iker Soler

Maintenance that's hard to do is not something anyone likes, and that's the type of maintenance that is very easy to put off again and again. For digital signs, however, the maintenance involved is actually very easy, and it usually takes only a few minutes to do, depending on how large the sign is. Unfortunately, most people still don't do it because they don't realize they have to.

Most maintenance for these devices concentrates mainly on removing dust and dirt, and you don't need fancy tools to get started. It does help tremendously, however, if you have a repair company inspect the signs yearly to look for problems with the circuitry and light board.

Compressed Air

Whether the sign is inside or outside, it's going to gather dust. Signs placed outside tend to have more protection from the elements, which can reduce the number of crevices and other hidden spots where dirt and dust can gather. However, both types of signs (indoor and outdoor) are prone to getting dirt in hard-to-reach areas. For this reason, giving each sign and its hardware a few blasts of compressed air—the same stuff you use to sweep crumbs out of your computer keyboard—is something you should do regularly. Don't let anything build up.

Mild Household Cleansers

Sometimes the signs end up with stains, such as from birds outside or someone dropping food on a sign inside. Usually, a mild household cleaner is all you need to remove stains. Do be careful around the light portion; sometimes a window glass cleaner is appropriate there, but if you are not sure, contact the manufacturer to find out what type of cleaner to use.

Wiping Clean With a Cloth

The signs will get dust and dirt on them naturally, so a daily or weekly dusting with a clean cloth is essential. That may sound obvious at first; cleaning off dust should be a no-brainer, but it's such a simple task that your staff might forget to do it or do it half-heartedly. Dust buildup will make the sign look dull, so this is a maintenance task you want to do regularly if possible. Obviously, a digital sign that is outside and 15 feet up a pole will not be something you can dust that easily, but interior signage and ground-level signage can be cleaned.

Having a digital sign company like A Precise Sign inspect the signs and perform the maintenance tasks at least once a year can help ensure that you aren't letting problems brew and grow larger. Should the company detect problems during the maintenance appointment, you can arrange for repairs quickly.
